Having your sewer line replaced is one of the most costly fixes you can make to your home.
Northeast Sewer & Drain Service is asked often “What does sewer replacement cost?” There is no simple answer to this question. It is dependent on a lot things. Depth of sewer line, length of sewer line from house to main sewer in the street, road opening permit fees, trenchless pipe installation vs. traditional trench digging?
However, I can give you a ball park figure $5000.00 to $20000.00+
There are a lot of variables to this so I will break down the top 4 ways to install a new sewer line or repair an existing sewer line.
1. Pipe patching….
Pipe patching allows us to fix a 2′ to 4′ in length pipe and 2″ to 24″ in diameter. We can enter the pipe through a clean out or sewer man hole. An epoxy liner will be inserted and reduce you pipe size by 5%. The epoxy is cured in place for 2 hours and the bladder is removed allowing for a smooth transition. No excavation is used in pipe patching so it is an affordable option for sewer repair. (see our blog for recent pipe patch jobs)
2. Pipe Bursting…..
Pipe bursting is another less invasive way of sewer line installation. If you are a candidate, then this is the option we recommend. We can pull a same size or larger piece of HDPE pipe through an existing old cast iron pipe, orangeburg pipe, clay tile pipe, cement pipe and PVC sewer pipe with minimal disruption to your yard or gardens (see our blog for a recent pipe bursting jobs) Excavation equipment is used to dig the pit in the street and dump trucks are used for proper fill, but equipment time is greatly reduced.
3. CIPP Pipe Relining
This relatively new to New England. It’s similar to pipe patching but the whole line is re-lined. And this only works for sewer lines that are off set but still relatively intact. It will not work for broken or crushed sewer lines. This is becoming popular because no excavation is used so price is reduced.
4. Trenching
This method is how it’s been done for years….A trench is dug from your foundation to the street, new pipe is installed, it is hooked up to the city main and then backfilled. This most times is the most expensive form of pipe installation due to the fact that heavy machinery is involved. This way starts at $4000.00 and can go as high as $20000.00+ depending on how deep your sewer line is and how long the run is…We still do it this way if necessary. Historically trenching is the most expensive form of sewer line installation because of the high cost of larger equipment, fuel and materials.
Northeast Sewer & Drain Service prefers to use the trenchless pipe installation. But all pipe installation and repair methods work great in Maine. 99% of sewer installation methods will have your sewer back in service within 1 day. Trenchless pipe installation usually with in 2-3 hours.
Quotes should be free and include all work. Some rogue contractors will exclude certain high priced necessary items for large mark up change orders. Make sure you ask if it’s an all inclusive price and that all necessary work is included to finish the job to completion. Nobody wants to pay $1000.00 for something should have been included.
Lastly, ask around. Lots of people have had their sewer lines replaced or repaired there are many reputable sewer replacement companies in your area. And if you can’t find one through friends, your local municipality should have names of sewer contractors that they use.
Hope this answers some of your sewer replacement cost questions.
