New sewer line installation by way of trenchless pipe bursting. By Northeast Sewer & Drain Service with Excavation by Pompeo Sand & Gravel Inc.
This pipe replacement was on the “Hill” meaning Munjoy Hill in Portland, and again very deep and a lot of brick sidewalks, narrow streets, old growth trees and very old sewer pipe.
The customer was very worried… He had over hauled his 1900’s 2 unit and was concerned about the sewer pipe replacement, not knowing really what it was all about. Like many people they think replacing a main sewer line is easy and inexpensive, and sometimes it can be…But most of the time you don’t know what kind of mess someones left behind…like going from 4″ cast iron pipe to 6″ Orangeburg pipe to 8″ PVC into the street to 10″ cast iron main.
The homeowner came out quite a few times to check on the progress, and commented that “he was very thankful for the profession he was in”…..Sewer replacement didn’t look like a fun job:) and sometimes it isn’t…..
After the pit was dug in the street it was found to be an original 4″ concrete. So we pulled new 4″ HDPE pipe with the back hoe and chain the old school way, didn’t even need to get the Pipe Genie off the truck. And through a series of fernco’s hooked it up to the 10” main sewer line in the street.
The entire pull with digging took 2 hours. The inspection, backfill and paving they were done by 3pm.
The home owner was thankful and in awe at how quickly it was done.
The neighbor came out from across the street, he had been in construction for 35 years and had retired 3 years ago…Thought pipe bursting was “pretty cool” and “wished that sewer pipe installation would have been that easy 20 years ago, his back might not be in such bad a shape” He was a very cool guy:)
